The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution on Friday that strongly condemned the ongoing offensive and advance of M23 rebels in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The 15 members called on the Rwanda Defence Forces to stop supporting the armed group and immediately withdraw from Congolese territory “without preconditions.”

The U.S. Department of the Treasury has sanctioned Rwanda’s Minister of State for Regional Integration James Kabarebe for the central role he plays in Rwanda’s support for the M23 rebels. It also sanctioned Lawrence Kanyuka, a leading member and spokesperson for the M23 and AFC rebel groups.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said on Tuesday that Rwanda-backed M23 rebels committed summary executions of children in Bukavu when they entered the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo city.

DR Congo national football team head coach Florent Ibenge presented his resignation to the president of the Congolese Football Association (FECOFA) on Wednesday at the headquarters of the national football body. In his statement of resignation to the press, Florent Ibenge thanked all his associates at AS Vita Club who “allowed him to join the national selection.”

The DR Congo Leopards beat Kenya Morans 82-61 on Saturday in Bamako in the finals of the first edition of the FIBA AfroCan. The competition is reserved for basketball players playing on the African continent. Maxi Munanga Shamba was named MVP of the competition.
