DR Congo’s TP Mazembe qualified for the semifinals of the CAF Champions League on Sunday by beating Al Ahly of Egypt 2-0 in Lubumbashi.

Talisman Tresor Mputu set his mark on the game with a cross that led to Mbwana Ali Samata opening the scoring for Mazembe on 48 minutes. The Tanzanian forward has now scored for Mazembe in their last three Champions League games on passes from Mputu. The prolific duo has been nicknamed “MputuMata” by Mazembe fans. Mputu was crucial again for the second goal. He served Deo Kanda who scored on 61 minutes.

The loss was the first by Ahly this year in the quarterfinals. Mazembe and Al Ahly both have 10 points in Group B and have already qualified for the semifinals. Mazembe lead the group on goal difference between the two teams (4-3), having lost to Ahly 2-1 in Egypt during the first leg.

Berekum Chelsea of Ghana drew with Zamalek of Egypt earlier on Sunday at the Military Academy stadium in Cairo. Chelsea (6 points) and Zamalek (1 point) can no longer qualify for the semifinals.

Mazembe will head to Ghana in two weeks to play against Berekum Chelsea and Ahly will clash with Cairo rivals Zamalek in the last games of the Group Stage.

In Group A, reigning champions Esperance of Tunisia and Sunshine Stars of Nigeria have already qualified for the semifinals.

The teams on top in each group will be paired with the teams in second place during the last-four stage of the premier continental football club competition.
