CHAN: Tunisia beat DR Congo to reach semis

Cafonline.com - February 19, 2011
DR Congo football team vs Tunisia

Tunisia completed the quartet for the semi finals after beating holders DR Congo 1-0 in the quarter final clash on Saturday in Khartoum.

Midfielder Dhaouiadi Zouhaier scored the only goal of match early in the second half to book a place with rivals Algeria at the last four.

It was a well deserved victory for Tunisia, who got the better of the defending champions to ease into the medal zone. The Congolese, who have been off-colour at the tournament yet again failed to live up to expectation as they were bundled out of the competition by a very determined Tunisian side.

From the onset, it was the Tunisians taking over proceedings with their midfield trio of Gharbi Fateh, Khaled Korbi and Gasdaoui Slama overpowering their Congolese counterparts with their possessive play.

Around the half-hour mark, Tunisia coach Sami Trabelsi brought on playmaker Ousama Darragi for Youssef Msakni and the latter’s presence further enhanced their capture of the midfield. It was only a matter of time that the Carthage Eagles would score despite the Leopards having few chances at goal.

Dangerman Alain Kaluyituka Dioko was marked out by Hichri Oualid, who curtailed passes from the middlr from Bedi Mbenza whilst Kabangu Mulota’s runs on the flank hardly troubled the Tunisian backline.

The Carthage Eagles resumed purposefully and succeeding in scoring the opener on 50 minutes through Dhaouiadi, who tore apart the DR Congo defence before unleashing past Muteba Kidiaba.

The Congolese responded six minutes later but were robbed off the equalizer by the crossbar after Kasongo Ngandu tip from Kabangu’s corner-kick ricocheted it to the relief of the Tunisians. The remainder of the encounter was balanced with both sides failing to alter the scoreline after countable chances at goal.
