Maxi Munanga Shamba was named MVP of the competition.
The DR Congo Leopards football team were also the winners of the first edition of the CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) in 2009.
President Félix Tshisekedi congratulated the Leopards on behalf of all Congolese.
“Back from Abuja, I learned with joy that the Leopards basketball team won the first edition of the AfroCan 2019. On behalf of all the Congolese people honored by this historic victory, I congratulate you for this prowess,” said Mr. Tshisekedi.
The Leopards qualified for the final after beating the Palancas Negras of Angola 84-78 on Thursday in the semifinals at the Palais des Sports Salamatou Maiga of Bamako.
The Leopards had a faultless run to the finals. Their victory in the finals was their fourth straight win after defeating Kenya 82-65 in the group stage, before going on to beat Nigeria 81-55, eliminating Chad in the quarterfinals 67-60, and Angola in the semifinals 84-78.
The competition brought together twelve countries: Mali, Algeria, Angola, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Guinea, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, DR Congo, Chad and Tunisia.
