Violent clashes are underway since yesterday near Nyamilima, a town north of Rutshuru (eastern Congolese province of North Kivu) and around a dozen kilometres from the border with Uganda. As referred by MISNA sources, the fighting that broke out last night is still underway. The only available toll for the moment indicates that around a thousand displaced have fled the area seeking refuge in the Rutshuru city. They are the most violent clashes of the past months€85, stated the MISNA sources, who requested anonymity. Based on the little and fragmentary information emerging from the area, the fighting on the field is between old rivals: i.e. Mayi Mayi (Congolese partisans active in support of Kinshasa during the war) and elements close to the RCD-Goma (Congolese Rally for Democracy), the pro-Rwandan group that before the peace accords dominated the region. The situation deteriorated drastically this morning at around 4:00a.m., when the Mayi Mayi conducted a heavy attack against a military camp of former RCD forces€85, added the source, underlining that in the next months the ex-RDC were due to enter the Congolese unified armed forces. Based on reports, it appears that elements of the United Nations Mission in DR-Congo (MONUC) and armed forces of Kinshasa have been deployed to Nyamilima.
