DR Congo, South Korea Sign Cooperation Agreements

South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak and President Joseph Kabila held a summit in Kinshasa on Thursday to promote practical cooperation in energy, resources development, infrastructure construction projects, and agriculture.

After meeting at the Palais de la Nation, the two presidents attended the signing of four cooperation agreements.

The Congolese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alexis Thambwe Mwamba, and the South Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Sung Hwan Kim, signed two bilateral agreements aimed at bolstering economic and technical cooperation between the two countries.

The president of the Import-Export Bank of Korea, Yong Hwan Kim, the president of POSCO, Joon-Yang Chung, and the Congolese Minister of Finance, Matata Ponyo, the Congolese Minister of Energy, Gilbert Tshiongo, and the Congolese Minister of Mines, Martin Kabwelulu, signed agreements on infrastructure and resources development.

The fourth agreement was signed by the president of Korea National Oil Corp., Kang Young Won,  and the Director and General Manager of the Congolese national oil company Cohydro, Alex Mutombo.

Discussions between the two leaders focused on ways to enhance effective cooperation between the two countries in areas such as devising a national strategic development plan, infrastructure , resources, trade, investment, and cultural exchanges.

President Lee also met with members of the Federation of Congolese Enterprises (FEC) at the Grand Hotel Kinshasa. His delegation also attended the economic forum which resulted in the signing of trade agreements.

President Joseph Kabila later hosted a state diner for President Lee at the Palais de la nation.

President Lee arrived in Kinshasa on Thursday after making a final pitch to the International Olympic Commitee in Durban, South Africa. The South Korean city of Pyeongchang was selected on Wednesday to host the 2018 Winter Olympics.

President Kabila visited South Korea in 2010 for a bilateral summit, following another visit in 2005.
