With the current pace of registrations, over one million voters will have been registered by the end of the week, stated Kemal Saiki, the director of public information of the United Nations peace mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC). Despite the protest of some political and civil sectors against the postponement of the June 30 vote decided by Parliament, Saiki added that the lines of citizens outside the voter registration offices are increasing. Nothing but elections, reiterated yesterday Congolese President Jospeh Kabila in an interview with the Belgian Le Soir' newspaper, without however revealing whether or not he will run for the presidency inherited from his father, Laurent Desiree Kabila, assassinated in 2001. In regard to the 30 June protests against the extension of the transitional government - which resulted in at least a dozen victims throughout the nation - Kabila spoke of a plot aimed at overthrowing the transitional institutions and impede the vote, the same accusation made in turn by his contesters.
